Each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams nominate one player who best upholds the legacy of helping others left behind by the late Roberto Clemente, who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve in 1972, on his way to deliver aid to earthquake survivors in Nicaragua.
The Tigers’ nominee for the 2012 Roberto Clemente Award is Miguel Cabrera, who has recently established the foundation bearing his own name, and has been a longtime supporter of the Detroit Tigers Foundation.
Presented by Chevrolet, the award will be selected with the help of fans, who can vote at www.MLB.com/ClementeAward, starting Tuesday.
