Alvarez, Travis named Tigers’ top minor leaguers


DETROIT — Second baseman Devon Travis was named the Tigers Minor League Player of the Year, while left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarez has been named the Tigers Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Travis moved up from Lo-A West Michigan to Hi-A Lakeland this season, hitting a combined .351 with 58 extra-base hits (28 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs), 76 RBI and 22 steals.

He was a 13th-round pick of the Tigers in the 2012 draft.

Alvarez, who spent three different stints with the big-league club before earning a September call-up to the big-league squad. 

The minor-league free agent signed last offseason went 8-6 with a 2.80 ERA for Triple-A Toledo. Alvarez had the fourth-best ERA and second-best WHIP (1.08) in the International League, while his 115 strikeouts were 10th-best in the league.
