Tigers claim RHP Reed off waivers

The Tigers claimed right-handed pitcher Evan Reed off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, and will assign him to Triple-A Toledo.

Detroit had a spot open on its 40-man roster, so there needed to be no corresponding move to clear space for the acquisition.

A third-round pick of Texas in 2007 out of Cal-Poly SLO, where he was the Mustangs' closer, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Reed was tried as a starter in the Rangers' organization, but has been primarily a reliever after joining the Marlins' system after Tommy John surgery in 2011.

Reed has a 19-19 career record in 184 appearances over six minor league seasons. He split time between Miami's Double-A affiliate in the Southern League, Jacksonville, and its Triple-A squad in the Pacific Coast League, New Orleans, finishing 30 of the 50 games he appeared in, collecting 12 saves.
