Cabrera leads five Tigers as finalists for Players Choice awards
DETROIT — As expected, Miguel Cabrera is leading the voting among his peers again.
The Tigers’ slugger was revealed Tuesday as a finalist for the 2013 Players Choice Awards’ Player of the Year – an award he won in 2012, and teammate Justin Verlander won in 2011 — as well as the American League Outstanding Player.
Teammates Max Scherzer and Anibal Sanchez are two of the three finalists for AL Outstanding pitcher, along with Texas’ Yu Darvish. Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias is a finalist for AL Outstanding Rookie, along with Tampa Bay teammates Wil Myers and Chris Archer, while Tigers DH Victor Martinez is a finalist for AL Comeback Player, along with Cleveland’s Scott Kazmir and retiring Yankees legend Mariano Rivera.
Cabrera’s competition for the AL Outstanding Player award is Baltimore’s Chris Davis and the Angels’ Mike Trout. Davis and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw are his competition for Player of the Year.
The award winners will be unveiled on an hour-long Players Choice Awards show on MLB Network at 8 p.m. on Nov. 4.
