Cabrera earns AL Player of Month honors — but not Tigers

Miguel Cabrera didn’t have a good month of August, health-wise, but he had a stellar month with the bat in his hands, hitting .357 with six doubles, eight homers and 24 RBI, despite a banged up ankle.

“Great month. I need another one like it,” the slugger said, when shown the totals in a tweet on a reporter’s cell phone.

The numbers were plenty to earn him the honor as American League Player of the Month, as voted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Funny thing is, though, he wasn’t voted as the TIGERS Player of the Month, by the local chapter — Prince Fielder was.

Fielder hit .370 with seven homers and 21 RBI in the month of August, presenting voters with a conundrum.

It’s the second time that Cabrera has earned the honor (the first was July 2008), as he joins Alan Trammell as the only two Tigers to win more than one.
