WS PREVIEW: A player-by-player look at the Tigers' World Series roster

Tigers manager Jim Leyland confirmed at this weekend's workouts that the playoff roster probably would not have any changes made to it prior to the World Series.

With that said, here's an encapsulated look at each of the 25 players on the playoff roster:

STARTING PITCHERS (4)
Justin Verlander • 35
Starting pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-5
Weight: 225
Age: 29
How acquired: Draft, 1st round, 2004
2012 stats: 17-8, 2.64 ERA, 6 CG, 238.1 IP, 239K
The skinny: Did not have the eye-popping statistical year he did in 2011, when he won MVP and Cy Young in the AL, but was still the ultimate horse in MLB, throwing more pitches and innings than anyone else.

Doug Fister • 58
Starting pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-8
Weight: 210
Age: 28
How acquired: From Seattle Mariners in 6-player trade on July 30, 2011
2012 stats: 10-10, 3.45 ERA, 2 CG, 161.2 IP, 137K
The skinny: Was hurt off-and-on throughout the season, keeping him from being the No. 2 he’d been when he first came over from Seattle at the 2011 trade deadline, but rounded into form in the final month of the season.

Anibal Sanchez • 19
Starting pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 5-11
Weight: 205
Age: 28
How acquired: From Miami Marlins in five-player trade on July 23, 2012
2012 stats (DET): 4-6, 3.74 ERA, 1 CG, 74.2 IP, 57K
The skinny: Struggled his first few starts with the Tigers after being traded over from the Marlins, but after picking up quickly on the new AL hitters he was facing and the catchers he was working with, became a no-brainer for playoff rotation.

Max Scherzer • 37
Starting pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-3
Weight: 220
Age: 27
How acquired: From Ariz. D’backs in 6-player, 3-team trade on Dec. 9, 2009
2012 stats: 16-7, 3.74 ERA, 187.2 IP, 231K
The skinny: Had a typically-inconsistent start to the season, but once he got rolling midseason, became the front-of-the-rotation pitcher everyone knew he had the stuff to be. Challenged Verlander for the MLB strikeout title.

RELIEF PITCHERS (7)
Rick Porcello • 48
Long relief pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-5
Weight: 200
Age: 23
How acquired: Draft, 1st round, 2007
2012 stats: 10-12, 4.59 ERA, 176.1 IP, 137K
The skinny: In the starting rotation all season long, Porcello lost out on a spot in the playoff rotation when Anibal Sanchez turned it on at the end of the year, but gives the Tigers the potential of multiple innings of playoff relief.

Drew Smyly • 33
Long relief pitcher
Throws: L
Bats: L
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190
Age: 23
How acquired: Draft, 2nd round, 2010
2012 stats: 4-3, 3.99 ERA, 99.1 IP, 94K
The skinny: Versatile rookie spent most of the year in the rotation, like Porcello, but pitched primarily out of the bullpen after the trade acquisition of Anibal Sanchez, and had looked unflappable so far.

Jose Valverde • 46
Short relief pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-4
Weight: 255
Age: 34
How acquired: FA signing, Jan. 26, 2010
2012 stats: 3-4, 3.78 ERA, 35 saves, 71 appearances, 69 IP, 48K
The skinny: After saving all 49 of his chances in 2011, his follow-up performance was not so air-tight, as he blew five saves. Two blowups in the playoffs led to a temporary re-assessment of the ninth-inning role.

Joaquin Benoit • 53
Short relief pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-3
Weight: 220
Age: 34
How acquired: FA signing, Nov. 19, 2010
2012 stats: 5-3, 3.68 ERA, 2 saves, 73 appearances, 71 IP, 84K
The skinny: The premier set-up man in the AL over the previous two seasons, Benoit did  not have as consistent a season in 2012, giving up more home runs (14) than any other AL reliever.

Octavio Dotel • 20
Short relief pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-0
Weight: 230
Age: 38
How acquired: FA signing, Dec. 9, 2011
2012 stats: 5-3, 3.57 ERA, 1 save, 57 appearances, 58 IP, 62K
The skinny: Picked up from the St. Louis Cardinals to handle the seventh inning duties, Dotel has been a jack-of-all-trades reliever for the Tigers: He can handle taking the ball anywhere from the sixth inning to the ninth.

Al Alburquerque • 62
Middle relief pitcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195
Age: 26
How acquired: FA signing, Nov. 19, 2010
2012 stats: 0-0, 0.68 ERA, 8 appearances, 13.1 IP, 18K
The skinny: Still recovering from a head injury, Alburquerque was not himself in the 2011 playoffs. Then he missed most of the 2012 regular season after elbow surgery. Now he’s back and looks himself again.

Phil Coke • 40
Middle relief pitcher
Throws: L
Bats: L
Height: 6-1
Weight: 210
Age: 29
How acquired: From NY Yankees in 6-player, 3-team trade on Dec. 9, 2009
2012 stats: 2-3, 4.00 ERA, 66 appearances, 54 IP, 51K
The skinny: A year after the unsuccessful attempt to convert him to a starter, Coke an up-and-down year in relief, struggling mightily near midseason. Had it figured out by playoff time, though, and closed out three of the four ALCS games.

INFIELDERS (8)
Alex Avila • 13
Catcher
Throws: R
Bats: L
Height: 5-11
Weight: 210
Age: 25
How acquired: Draft, 5th round, 2008
2012 stats: 116 GP, .243, 9 HR, 2-3B, 21-2B, 48 RBI, 42 runs
The skinny: May not have had the offensive regular season he would have liked, or one to match the All-Star caliber one he had in 2011, but has already exceeded his postseason production from a year ago, when he was beat up. Defensively sound.

Gerald Laird • 9
Catcher
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-1
Weight: 225
Age: 32
How acquired: FA signing, Nov. 18, 2011
2012 stats: 63 GP, .282, 2 HR, 8-2B, 1-3B, 11 RBI, 24 runs
The skinny: Was the perfect complement to Alex Avila, keeping the starting catcher healthier than he’d been last year. Worked well with the pitching staff, as well, and played good defense behind the plate.

Prince Fielder • 28
First base
Throws: R
Bats: L
Height: 5-11
Weight: 275
Age: 28
How acquired: FA signing, Jan. 27, 2012
2012 stats: 162 GP, .313, 30 HR, 33-2B, 1-3B, 108 RBI, 83 runs
The skinny: Combined with Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to give the Tigers arguably the most potent No. 3 and 4 hitters in the game of baseball. Wasn’t exceptional at first base — he missed some routine plays — but will occasionally make the spectacular.

Omar Infante • 4
Second base
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 5-11
Weight: 195
Age: 30
How acquired: From Miami Marlins in five-player trade on July 23, 2012
2012 stats (DET): 64 GP, .257, 4 HR, 7-2B, 5-3B, 20 RBI, 27 runs
The skinny: Struggled a bit after the trade brought him back to Detroit, particularly on defense, but will make the spectacular play that none of the Tigers’ other second-base candidates can.

Jhonny Peralta • 27
Shortstop
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215
Age: 30
How acquired: From the Cleveland Indians, for Giovanni Soto, July 28, 2010
2012 stats: 150 GP, .239, 13 HR, 32-2B, 3-3B, 63 RBI, 58 runs
The skinny: Did not match the stats from his career year in 2011, but saved his best for last this year, and is playing as well as anyone else on the squad in the playoffs.

Miguel Cabrera • 24
Third base
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-4
Weight: 240
Age: 29
How acquired: From Florida Marlins in 8-player trade on Dec. 5, 2007
2012 stats: 161 GP, .330, 44 HR, 139 RBI, 40-2B, 109 runs
The skinny: Won the Triple Crown in the regular season, leading the AL in average, home runs and RBI. Is the most feared right-handed hitter in the game at the moment, and played a much more respectable third base than was expected.

Danny Worth • 29
Infield
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185
Age: 27
How acquired: Draft, 2nd round, 2007
2012 stats: 43 GP, .216, 3-2B, 3 RBI
The skinny: On the postseason roster to be used as a defensive sub and a pinch runner, Worth can play any of the infield positions in a pinch. Has as much defensive range as anyone, save possibly Omar Infante.

Ramon Santiago • 39
Infield
Throws: R
Bats: S
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175
Age: 33
How acquired: minor league FA, Dec. 12, 2005
2012 stats: 93 GP, .206, 2 HR, 7-2B, 1-3B, 17 RBI
The skinny: One of the few remaining players from the 2006 World Series squad, Santiago was brought back in a utility infield role, but got his crack at the unsettled second base job, too. Can back up at three of four infield positions.

OUTFIELDERS (6)
Austin Jackson • 14
Center field
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185
Age: 25
How acquired: From NY Yankees in 6-player, 3-team trade on Dec. 9, 2009
2012 stats: 137 GP, .300, 16 HR, 29-2B, 10-3B, 66 RBI, 103 runs
The skinny: Missed time with a strained muscle in his side midseason, and the Tigers took off when he returned. Had his best offensive year (hitting .300 for the first time), and is one of MLB’s premier defenders in center field.

Delmon Young • 21
Left field/DH
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-3
Weight: 240
Age: 27
How acquired: From Minnesota Twins for Lester Oliveros, Aug. 16, 2011
2012 stats: 151 GP, .267, 18 HR, 27-2B, 1-3B, 74 RBI, 54 runs
The skinny: Inherited the designated hitter role after the offseason injury to Victor Martinez, and was not a consistent force until the playoffs rolled around. He mashed against the Yankees again in the ALCS, earning series MVP honors.

Andy Dirks • 12
Left field/right field
Throws: L
Bats: L
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195
Age: 26
How acquired: Draft, 8th round, 2008
2012 stats: 88 GP, .322, 8 HR, 18-2B, 5-3B, 35 RBI, 56 runs
The skinny: Missed nearly a third of the season with a strained Achilles tendon, but picked up right where he left off on his return, and has been the most consistent corner outfielder — when healthy — all season.

Avisail Garcia • 34
Right field
Throws: R
Bats: R
Height: 6-4
Weight: 240
Age: 21
How acquired: non-drafted FA, July 6, 2007
2012 stats: 23 GP, .319, 7 runs, 3 RBI
The skinny: Brought up from Double-A Erie on the eve of roster expansions, Garcia is a prospect who may not be ready for full-time action, but can be a perfect complementary player, bringing excellent defensive play, as well as a surprising bat.

Quintin Berry • 52
Outfield
Throws: L
Bats: L
Height: 6-0
Weight: 175
Age: 27
How acquired: minor league FA, Nov. 9, 2011
2012 stats: 94 GP, .258, 2 HR, 6-3B, 10-2B, 29 RBI, 44 runs, 21/21 stolen bases
The skinny: Came up as an injury fill-in for Austin Jackson, and played well enough to keep a roster spot. A career minor leaguer, Berry has provided a spark with speed that is in short supply on the roster.

Don Kelly • 32
Utility
Throws: R
Bats: L
Height: 6-4
Weight: 190
Age: 32
How acquired: minor league FA, Jan. 14, 2009
2012 stats: 75 GP, .186, 1 HR, 2-2B, 1-3B, 7 RBI
The skinny: The Tigers’ jack-of-all-trades, Kelly was mired in a season-long slump when he was DFA’ed in August, but he’s back for the playoffs, and contributing as a defensive replacement and pinch runner.
