Leyland tabs Ventura, Gibbons for AL staff for All-Star Game

Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced Thursday he'd selected Toronto skipper John Gibbons (above left) and Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura as coaches to add to the American League staff for the All-Star Game in July.

Ventura and Gibbons will join Tigers hitting coaches Lloyd McClendon and Toby Harrah, pitching coach Jeff Jones, bench coach Gene Lamont, first-base coach Rafael Belliard, third-base coach Tom Brookens and bullpen coach Mike Rojas.

Gibbons was on Ozzie Guillen's AL staff for the 2006 All-Star Game, while Ventura, a two-time All-Star as a player, is going to the game as a coach for the first time.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy chose Mets manager Terry Collins and Nationals manager Davey Johnson — who is retiring after the season — to add to his National League staff.

Leyland has made five previous All-Star Game appearances, two as manager, and three times as a coach.

In 2007, Leyland chose Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire and Texas' Ron Washington to add to his staff of Belliard, McClendon, Jones, Chuck Hernandez and Andy Van Slyke. In 1998, Leyland chose Colorado Rockies manager Don Baylor and Lamont, who was then the Pirates manager, to add to his Marlins staff.

The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 16 at Citi Field in New York.
