Anibal Sanchez puts his name in history books with rare 4K inning in postseason

Anibal Sanchez became the first pitcher to strike out four batters in a postseason inning since 1908.

The only previous pitcher to do so was Orval Overall, who did it on Oct. 14, 1908, the day the Cubs last won the World Series. He did it against the Tigers, too, in the second of his two head-to-head matchups with Detroit’s Wild Bill Donovan.

Sanchez got Jacoby Ellsbury to start the inning, then Shane Victorino reached on a strikeout when Strike 3 eluded catcher Alex Avila, the wild pitch allowing Victorino to reach first. Sanchez then walked Dustin Pedroia, but struck out David Ortiz on a checked swing, and got David Napoli swinging to end the historic inning.

According to the Tigers media guide, no pitcher had ever done it for the Tigers in the franchise’s history.
