Victor Martinez earns American League Player of the Month honors

All the more proof of how badly the Tigers need to re-sign Victor Martinez.

The designated hitter — who has begun filling in for the hobbled Miguel Cabrera more and more at first base recently — has also been stealing his teammate’s schtick, earning American League Player of the month honors for August.

Detroit’s last AL Player of the Month was Cabrera last August.

In the midst of perhaps the best season of his career, Martinez led MLB hitters in RBI (30), intentional walks (7) and times reached base (61) in the month, and was in a three-way tie with 41 hits. He had a pair of seven-game hit streaks, and 14 multi-hit games in August.

For the season, VMart is leading the AL in on-base percentage (.402) and intentinal walks (32), and has a career-high 28 home runs. He’s second in the majors in hitting (.332) behind Houston’s Jose Altuve.
