Tigers pick 14 players on second day of MLB Draft
After taking Texas high school power pitcher Jake Thompson (right) with their first pick of the day (2nd round, No. 91 overall), the Tigers grabbed college arms in four of the next five rounds (including one of Thompson's former high school teammates, Vanderbilt's Drew VerHagen), and seven times in the first 15 rounds. The run on arms came after Detroit picked all-around prep athlete Austin Schotts, a middle infielder who projects as a center fielder.
“YouTube his punt return highlights,” Chadd joked. “I didn’t see them until after we drafted him, but they’re impressive.” [Click here to see one.]
Detroit grabbed all-Summit League catcher Bennett Pickar in the 11th round, Florida State second baseman Devon Travis in the 13th round, and Central Michigan University shortstop Jordan Dean in the 15th round.
Rounds 15-40 will take place on Wednesday, starting at noon.
